What is CAM? When is CAM used? What is the Cost?

What is Continuous Alcohol Monitoring (“CAM”)?
When is CAM used?
What is the cost?

CAM is an element of the law.
CAM is a supervision tool.
CAM is also a unique device offering a treatment with a proven solution.
CAM, as a process, or as a device is highly effective.

Overcrowded jails and lengthy court calendars add to the statement that Judicial officials like options. CAM is increasingly becoming an option used by the Courts on a daily basis.
CAM is a tool used by magistrates and judges. It is often utilized at the pre-trial and post-trial stages of supervision but can be an option for other areas of the Court process.
DWI, Drug, Juvenile, Family, Criminal, Wellness, and Domestic Relations Courts are all areas where CAM is sometimes used.
Defendants, upon advice from their attorneys may opt to voluntarily submit to CAM in order to show the Court that they:

  1. Have no ongoing problem with alcohol;
  2. Are making an effort to handle sobriety issues;
  3. Have abstained from alcohol during a process period.

Offender re-entry programs and half-way facilities utilize CAM for clients under intensive probation.
Proof of sobriety is often required at DMV hearings during the restoration process of driving privileges.
Proof of abstinence is often required in proceedings where parental rights are affected.
Remote alcohol monitoring and ignition interlock are tools which may also be used. However these options may not satisfy the current trend towards CAM supported by the Courts and state legislatures.
There are many success stories that point to CAM which show that it has been used effectively to bridge to sobriety over a wide road paved with failures.
CAM fees are usually paid by the offenders or wearers.
Fees generally range from $10-$12 per day with a $50-$100 one-time installation fee. The disparity in the installation fee depends upon the provider but is usually offset for in-office installations.
